Drug Uses
Isosorbide Mononitrate is used for preventing angina (chest pain) caused by heart disease. It reduces the workload of the heart and helps to relieve chest pain.
How Taken
Use Isosorbide Mononitrate as directed by your doctor. Take Isosorbide Mononitrate with or without a meal. Isosorbide Mononitrate is usually taken twice a day, with seven hours interval between the doses. The first dose should preferably be taken in the morning upon waking up, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. If you need to stop taking Isosorbide Mononitrate or add a new medicine, your doctor will gradually lower your dose.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Isosorbide Mononitrate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Isosorbide Mononitrate, if you have heart problems (eg, heart failure, heart attack, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), low blood pressure, blood problems (eg, anemia), dehydration, bleeding the brain, an overactive thyroid, or have had a recent head injury, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Isosorbide Mononitrate while you are pregnant. It is not known if Isosorbide Mononitrate is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you use Isosorbide Mononitrate, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Isosorbide Mononitrate. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not drink alcohol while taking Isosorbide Mononitrate. You should not take Isosorbide Mononitrate if you are also taking a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (eg, sildenafil, Tadalafil, vardenafil). When you begin taking Isosorbide Mononitrate, headaches are likely to occur. Isosorbide Mononitrate should not be used to stop an attack of angina, it is intended only for prevention of an attack. Isosorbide Mononitrate may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Isosorbide Mononitrate. Do not use Isosorbide Mononitrate in children. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- Dizziness, headache, nausea. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), changes in vision, fainting, numbness of an arm or leg, severe stomach pain, sharp or crushing chest pain, sudden leg pain, sudden, severe headache, sudden shortness of breath, vomiting.
Storage
Store Isosorbide Mononitrate at 59 – 86 °F (15 – 30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Isosorbide Mononitrate out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Isosorbide Mononitrate overdose are- breathing problems, confusion, dizziness, fainting, fever,ushing, headache, increased pressure in the head, irregular heartbeat, loss of appetite, nausea, paralysis, sweating, visual disturbances, vomiting.
More Information
Isosorbide Mononitrate may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Isosorbide Mononitrate is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Isosorbide Mononitrate with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Isosorbide Mononitrate should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
