Drug Uses
Evista is indicated for use by women after menopause to treat and prevent osteoporosis. Additional calcium and vitamin D should be taken with Evista if there is not enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet.
How Taken
Evista comes in tablets to taken in orally. Usually the recommended dosage is a 60mg tablet taken once a day. Evista tablets may be taken with or without a meal.
Warnings/Precautions
You may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment or you may not be able to take Evista at all if you currently have or have a history of- blood clots, stroke, cancer, increased triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood), or liver disease. This drug is in the FDA pregnancy category X, which means that studies in animals or human beings have demonstrated fetal abnormalities, or there is evidence of fetal risk based on human experience or both. Therefore, do not take Evista if you are pregnant or likely to become pregnant. It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk. Do not take Evista if you are breast feeding, unless your doctor approves.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- hotashes and leg cramps. Hotashes usually appear during the first 6 months after of treatment. Not very common, but a serious side effect of Evista is development of blood clots in the veins. You should seek medical attention immediately if any of the signs of blood clot occur. The symptoms are- leg pain or a feeling of warmth in the calves, swelling of the legs, hands or feet, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood, sudden change in your vision, such as loss of vision or blurred vision. Blood clots may be fatal or cause serious medical problems. Contact your doctor if you experience any other side effects or have any queries.
Storage
Store this medication at room temperature 15–30°C (59–86°F). Keep away from children and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
Overdose
There have been no reports of Evista overdosage. However, if overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.
More Information
If you are planning to have any surgery (including dental), notify your doctor that you are taking Evista. If you need a long period of bed rest, you might have to end for a while the treatment with Evista. While undergoing treatment with Evista, do not sit still for a long time. Discuss with your doctor smoking and the use of alcohol, as this can increase bone loss.
